We just had a juicy bit of information dropped on us by Valve – LG is showing a headset prototype at the company’s booth.
Neither HTC nor Valve have announced numbers for their HTC Vive headset.
According to a statement from Valve, the device will offer a “high fidelity, next generation VR experience”.
We will update this story when LG responds. Final pricing and launch dates are not being revealed at this time.
Valve’s efforts are VR are geared towards multiple hardware parters: Valve head Gabe Newell has discussed plans for future hardware before, and Valve’s Lighthouse tracking system was opened up to third-party developers a year ago.
SteamVR isn’t alone in licensing VR technology, however.
Valve has confirmed that LG is developing a VR headset that will utilize SteamVR Tracking and, ostensibly, the OpenVR platform.
“The LG HMD prototype is created to deliver a high fidelity, next generation VR experience”, reads Valve’s press release.
LG and Valve are now asking developers to visit Valve’s GDC booth and provide them with feedback on their prototype. The wording of the announcement seemingly suggests that LG and Valve aren’t developing a headset that’s meant to be paired with just a smartphone like Samsung’s Gear VR and Google’s Daydream View are.
