Virtual reality movies are coming to Dubai as part of the Dubai International Film Festival 2017.

“DIFFerent Reality” is coming back to town for the second year, with an eclectic mix of movies and unique experiences that, according to DIFF, “challenge the boundaries of traditional film and take willing audiences on a journey of 360-degree, 3D, audio-visual cinema”.

Taking place between Wednesday December 6 and Wednesday 13, DIFF will present ten fully immersive movies made for VR at the special du VR Cinema, located at Madinat Jumeirah’s events and conference centre.

Titles range from hard-hitting movie on societal awareness The Last Chair, to a light hearted movie about the town-based goings-on in little Britain, The Committee, or made-for-VR short movie Sergeant James – which focuses on the perennial battle between a child, his bedtime and what he fears under his bed.

One of the most interesting looking short films is even a mind-bending trip through the consciousness of an artificial intelligence, in Dreams of Blue, which explores a world where an AI has become self-aware, and reflects on the meaning of life using information extrapolated from the internet.

“Each edition of DIFF, we strive to innovate and inspire, and with the inception of the VR showcase in 2016 it gave us a whole new avenue to explore,” said Abdulhamid Juma, DIFF’s chairman. “This year we are welcoming some truly incredible ‘DIFFerent’ films that will go beyond the wildest imaginations of our audiences. The state-of-the-art technology and filmmaking genius behind the creation of these films will make the Virtual Reality showcase a real crowd pleaser at this year’s festival.”

Tickets are on sale now, setting you back Dhs35 per person, but look absolutely bargain value for what is promising to be a truly unique experience. The full list of movies can be found at here.
